Dormannu

On June the 12th 1984 I walked along Delaware Road, Maida Vale and into BBC Studio Four to record a session for DJ legend John Peel.

I remember archaic equipment at the end of long cream corridors, everything done in one take, recorded with virtually no effects.

The studio had an amplifier with no gain structure which I wasn’t allowed to turn up. I remember not being allowed to touch anything at all. I had to convey exactly what I wanted to an engineer or producer through thick glass. He and only he made adjustments to large bakelite dials.

The songs were played live, the sound was down to how we played, it was a far cry from the way we do things today. Above all, I remember being hungry!
