Something I have learned about myself in the past week or so.

Life is about possibility. Without me, there may never be a Transport
Museum in Biggleswade. In fact at the moment there is no museum at
all. Sure lots of people are having conversations about it, yet nobody
is really doing anything. The focus seems to be on what is not
possible rather than creating a possible outcome then taking actions
consistent with having such a place become a reality.

So what am I doing?

I am introducing myself as a new conversation about museums in
Biggleswade. I have captured the interest of a friend with an
engineering works who can also see it’s possible.

And as the man with the idea, I am the first point of contact. While I
see myself as the founder not the owner, I actually want to create it
so it lives on without me, way beyond my lifetime.

At this present point in time, there is nothing. The museum exists in
my mind and in a conversation I had with a friend. Unless my friend
sees it as possible, the conversation will die. I need to be
responsible for creating the museum in conversation such that my
friend “gets it” and continues to see its potential. Right here, right
now, “I” am the museum.

By making my life work, I am making the museum work. So coming from a
place where there is a museum, what steps do I need to take to get
there?

I recognise I need to operate from a solid base. If my life is in
chaos, I will occur to others as chaotic. People, out there in the
world need to get that this is happening.

So, in doing the housework I am taking the first steps towards
creating a solid foundation for a transport museum.

By managing my breathing, anxiety, panic attacks and subsequent
depression, I am creating the possibility of exemplary customer
service.

I see the world winding down for Christmas and realise I am starting
this project at the perfect time of year.

By the time I have my presentations ready, the local community will be
saying their New Year resolutions and being positive.

Launching ideas on a wave of enthusiasm can only serve the autistic
community I wish to provide employment opportunities for more fully.

This is where the true magic starts, right here, right now!

Visit http://transportarcheum.com to find out more about it.

See you on the other side of the looking glass,

With my sharply focused autistic mind well and truly zoomed in on my ability to get Tai Chi right, I notice a hesitation.

A micro second hesistancy which alters my performance.

Which sets me apart from those who don’t think.

From those who have programmed the movement into kinaesthetic memory unwaveringly.

Because I think very fast and I am extremely focused, I appear NOT to be overthinking as much as the novices, but I am.

Not letting go seems to be an intrinsic part of my Aspergers, almost as if I don’t quite have the same mental space to let go to.

What I also wonder is if I wasn’t processing the question ‘if I am right about this the next move is…’ would my performance improve.

This is where programs like the Landmark Forum teach us to excel. By giving us an awareness of the semi-conscious thought patterns we run, we get to choose not to do them.

Or in my case use even more mental energy observing them as they occur.

See you on the other side of the looking glass,

mark ty-wharton

Holographic Creativity Program

"This evening instead of taking my usual nap after work,
I put your creativity program on instead.
It had a remarkable effect...
I feel really relaxed and rested now, and I'm looking
forward to my next try.
You are really on to something here..." Klaus, Norway.

After researching famous creative people from the past, I discovered it was common practice for notable names to have afternoon naps, so I decided to meditate/sleep in the afternoon to increase my creativity.

Unable to find a suitable audio program for myself to meditate/sleep with, I created my own starting with a binaural/holographic recording of dolphins leaping in the North Sea that I made with my daughter Cloudia.

Then I looked at the technology in the Voyager brain training machine I bought in the early nineties. It uses audio tones to create the illusion of a beat frequency for your brain to synchronise to.

I have created a program that starts by simulating the kind of brain waves we experience while sleeping or in deep meditation.

After about twenty minutes I alert the listener and invoke brain waves that simulate stage 5 REM sleep. One aim of polyphasic sleep is to increase creativity by going directly to stage 5 REM sleep during power naps. This program is designed have a similar effect, without having to go to the extremes of sleep deprivation.

Listening to stage 5 REM beat frequencies while coming out
of sleep could be the most creative brain wave pattern a
human being could experience.

The program ends with a brief musical section and brings you gently back to conciousness at which point you are advised to make a record of your creative thoughts on a notepad or dictaphone.

It is essential to use stereo headphones. Please listen responsibly. Do not listen while driving or operating machinery. I do not recommend you listen to this program if you have a history of epilepsy or a seizure disorder.

I created this particular piece of music c.1983/4 and re-recorded it just before we moved house in May.

It features a two cycle per second binaural brain wave synchronisation pattern (when listened to with headphones)

The upshot being, it fools your brain into thinking you are asleep when you are not and makes you feel amazing.

I have been using it as my personal delta wave training tape and sleep aid for a few months now.

I would like others to benefit from this twenty three minute piece of music so I am making it available for download for £1UKP.

Despite spending years of my life on tour with various bands, I have been lucky enough to witness the birth of all three of my children.

I cannot imagine what it would have been like to be away in a foreign land and to return to a new child.

Being at the birth provides an important and un-severable emotional bond.
When my daughter was born, she was handed to me, a purple screaming bloody mess, with a dented head.

I looked at her wrapped in a coarsely laundered white towel and it was love at first sight.

There is a bond between us that is immeasurable.

It spans all of time, forever.

When my eldest son was born, I heard his first cry muffled in the blood of birth.

A sound that is hard to forget.

When my youngest son was born, I held his little hand and we slept.

Waves of emotion enveloping my every breath.

The bonds of love that brought these children into the world are tangible passionate moments.

It is relatively easy to form an emotional bond with an adult.

For me however, without being at the birth, I wonder if having children would carry any meaning for me.

All three births made me cry.

Had I been on a tour and celebrated a blurred mobile phone picture with a Guinness and a cigar, things may not have been the same.

If all that marked the birth of my children was a bigger hangover the following day, would I ever have connected with them?

A touring musician I know has just had a child.

He was in Las Vegas as the child was born in London.

I cannot imagine what that must have been like.

As I get older, it becomes clearer which of life’s events the truly important ones are.

I have the profound privilege to always be in the right place at the right time.

And when things don’t appear to be going as I planned.

All I need do is remember that.

See you on the other side of the looking glass,

I am going to use my blog as a sounding board for an idea. I gladly welcome comments on what I write over the next few posts and with permission would like to use relevant stories. If you post a comment please bear in mind it may end up published elsewhere.

I have decided to write an e-book about panic disorder.

While this book is a ‘left field’ look at what I have figured out about me, it may just work for you to. I invite you to listen to my story and take what’s useful and leave what’s not behind.

This blog entry will form the basis of chapter six.

So what are the benefits of having anxiety?

The first benefit is that I know I can handle anything.

With anxiety or a panic attack there is a glass ceiling. In my experience there is a finite supply of the neuro-chemical that causes anxiety, which means if I am anxious, or jumping out of a plane, I feel roughly the same.

Which in turn means, if an action involves doing things I can physically or mentally do when I am having a panic attack I can do it.

In my case, I can still walk, I can still see, I can still talk to people. I can understand simple direct instructions and much more.

A predisposition towards anxiety and panic actually means that with some training I can be good at things which need razor sharp focus, tense muscles and unwavering concentration.

Chances are I would make a very good racing driver, boxer or even a comedian, look at Lee Evans for example.

I have learned that I literally get so far and no matter how frightened I am it doesn’t get any worse.

So if something is terrifying I can do it.

Bottom line…

I can do it.

In fact because I am practiced at dealing with the neuro-chemistry, I am at a distinct advantage. I personally believe anxiety is something human beings, who have it, should be embracing and learning to switch adrenalin to something useful like clarity maybe?

Okay to put everything in context, if you asked a snow boarding enthusiast if they would like to snow board every day for the rest of his life the chances are they may want time off.

And to help you to take time off I am going to look at some psychological tricks you can employ to manage anxiety.

The first one is to learn to meditate. You don’t need to reach thoughtless awareness. All you need do is get to a place where you are relaxed and you recognise your thoughts.

Meditate with the intention of becoming completely thoughtless, of being in an empty space without meaning. This will allow you to focus on your thoughts and recognise them as they come to you. Sounds paradoxical doesn’t it? It is not.

Typically in anxiety and panic disorders, the person experiencing the condition will be in a kind of day dream, locked into an almost obsessive thought pattern known as a vicious cycle.

Once started, it is very difficult to break out of.

Thoughts naturally occur in cycles anyway and typically an event will break even the most focused train of thought.

However, the physiology of anxiety, the presence of the neuro-chemical, will be a reminder to get right back on that thought as soon as whatever broke it has gone. For me, distraction therapy such as reading a book, or newspaper, or focusing on an external event simply doesn’t work once a vicious cycle is underway.

With a vicious cycle, the easiest thing to do is not to let one get started.

Break the train of thought before it starts.

So you probably want to know how to do it right?

If you spend time focusing on being relaxed and in thoughtless awareness, your thoughts will occupy a familiar space.

Monitor your thoughts.

Practice only indulging thoughts which are facts.

Avoid recollecting stories from the past.

If you have a thought like “wow, this is spooky/weird” then don’t start thinking of other times when things were spooky/weird. If you think about other times this happened, you will create more negative feelings, which will in turn trigger more negative thoughts.

Don’t think about why you shouldn’t be thinking the thought either, this is just as bad.

When the thought pops into your head, simply don’t allow yourself to consider it, drop it like a hot brick, move on to the next thought.

Ignore all statements such as:

I wonder if…

What if…

Only rely on what you perceive to be the truth with your senses, what is in the present right now, not your past experience or what might happen.

Of course the psychological tricks might not work immediately. These kind of exercises take commitment and practice, so what else can you do to manage anxiety?

Here’s an obvious one if you suffer from social phobias. Stay at home. Don’t go out. Communicate via the Internet, have your shopping delivered.

Find a safe person who understands what is going on with you. Get an advocate, or a mentor from a befriending service to help you.

If you suffer from anxiety from being alone, go out. Make sure you have people you can contact if you start to feel off.

Take medication.

Personally I am terrified of medicine because most of the time I have a paradoxical reaction to it and it can have the opposite effect and make my anxiety considerably worse.

However if you work with your doctor, you should be able to come up with a solution that works.

Why have I mentioned doctors before alternative therapies and natural medicines?

Because your doctor should be your first port of call.

If you’re suffering from symptoms of panic, it’s important to see a doctor to rule out the following possibilties:

Hyperthyroidism
Hypoglycemia
Medication withdrawal
Mitral valve prolapse, a minor cardiac problem that occurs when one of the heart’s valves doesn’t close correctly.
Stimulant use (amphetamines, cocaine, caffeine)

Please eliminate other illnesses that may cause similar symptoms before trying anything in this book, regardless of what you believe about modern medicine.

Alternative therapies that have worked for me in the past include:

Anything that is relaxing, my favourites are Bowen technique, Tai Chi and Yoga.

I recently read that Chamomile tea works when brewed very strongly, if you put 4 tea bags in a cup and make it like a syrup.

Hibiscus, Lavender and Sandalwood are all good too, as are Vervain and Valerian.

And what to avoid?

Alcohol, Amphetamines, Caffeine, Cannabis, Cocaine, Dairy products, Ecstasy, Flavourings, Guarana, Mercury fillings, Nicotine, Other recreational drugs, Preservatives, Processed foods, Refined Sugar, Wheat.

If you are serious about mastering anxiety, my final advice would be to have your mercury fillings removed (if you have them) and after doing a detox program to eliminate residual heavy metals from your system, eat a natural low carbohydrate diet of super foods, fruit, vegetables, white meat and drink only water.

Whatever you do, believe in it or don’t do it at all.

As I said in my book, ‘The Law Of Attraction states that thoughts (both conscious and unconscious) dictate the reality of your life, whether or not you are aware of it’.

It can also be stated that ‘What you think is what you feel’.

I don’t think I have written anything new here. I do however hope to have taken a new look at anxiety, and, perhaps explored a few things from different angles.

In the year 1600, Shakespeare gave Hamlet the following line “There is neither good nor ill but thinking makes it so”.

And here we are 400 years on with roughly the same struggle.

See you on the other side of the looking glass,
